Helping inner city youths reach their fullest potential is very important to Monica and I.  It started in 2005 when Monica was accepted by Teach for America and began teaching 9th grade science in the Bronx.  Before she joined the “Corp”, I had a basic idea about the serious challenges that young people had in the inner cities, but I never cared enough to truly understand their problems and the negative forces working against these children’s success.

My journey with the PAL began because I was inspired by Monica’s work with Teach for America and the not so subtle prodding of my good friend Mooch.  Mooch with the encouragement and guidance of PAL head Sgt. Frank Williams had started a downtown football team, they had the kids but didn’t have the coaches.  What I thought would be a part-time volunteer role turned into a 7-day a week second job. My brother-in-law Mike Rooney, cousin Rob Wortman and old high school buddy Patrick O’Brien came to my rescue and helped me through that first year.  Three years later...and we are still at it!

The money I raise will help buy much needed equipment, help the P.A.L. fund new teams (one of which is a flag rugby team), and help build a new recreation center for the children.
